RANDY WADE'S BID FOR COUNTY SHERIFF LEAVES COHEN WITHOUT "A GREAT BLACK HOPE"

I predicted in July of last year after I was told by sources that Sheriff Mark Luttrell would run for County Mayor. I also stated that if Luttrell did in fact run for county mayor that Randy Wade who served for over 20 years in the Sheriff's department would ran for the Sheriff's office.

So I was not surprised when my friend of over 20 plus years called me last week and asked what i thought about him running. I said "Randy if your health is okay and you want it bad enough run for it" And that's exactly what he has decided to do. Randy who served under former A.C. Gilless as Administrative Assistant is well known for his undying loyalty to his friends and his constant desire to serve and has a great chance of winning,But where does that leave Steve Cohen?

Wade has served as the right arm of the 2 term congressman and has also served as Cohen's biggest link to the Black community and the Black vote,His departure will cause serious harm to a campaign that will need all the Black support that can be garnered to defeat Dr. Willie W. Herenton who wants to take the job away from Cohen.

Many Blacks only supported Cohen because they were asked by Wade,Many churches opened their doors solely because Wade had relationships with many Black pastors. With Wade who has told me he's leaving Cohen's staff in latter March not running advance Steve Cohen will have many doors that have been open in the past closed.

Wade cannot afford to get involved in Cohen's race if he wants to be sheriff,His campaign must stay away from giving the appearance that he is either supporting Cohen or Herenton,He must stay neutral so as not to alienate any voters.

With Wade gone I wonder what Negro will the congressman turn to for help?

DON'T COUNT COHEN OUT YET

The real key to Willie Herenton scoring a knockout blow to Steve Cohen in the Ninth Congressional District race will be Herenton's ability to get large members of his political base to the polls.

But even with the exit of Randy Wade as Cohen's "Great Black Hope," it is still too early to count Cohen out. Another "Great Black Hope" might surface and tighten up the Herenton-Cohen showdown.

And then there is big Wendi Thomas of The Commercial Appeal constantly leading the charge against Herenton. If the Herenton voters become apathetic, do not go to the polls and vote for Willie, then a combination of white voters and anti-Herenton black voters could send Cohen back in through the back door.

This would be an upset, but upsets do happen. Just ask the Indianapolis Colts.

You were with him before when he advertised with you. You're the Negro standing ready if he will go for one of your ten dollar a week ads. You were against Willie and for Cohen in the past. A dime on the sidewalk would make you kiss an ass as you lowered yourself to pick it up with your teeth.

Its a damn shame in all of politics and all the damn lies that have been told and could be told: Mayor H. running on the most pitfully disgusting platform, playing that race card....

Thats some bad credit. Been in office 18yrs and the damn thug ain't got decency enough to run a decent platform.

Well you think blacks still primitive and you talk we need black representation. The county didn't have any white representation and MayorWharton did good.

WHERE'S THE ENTHUSIASM?

Right now voters in the 9th Congressional District don't seem to have much enthusiasm for this Steve Cohen-Willie Herenton race.

Could it be that the voters are just tired of Memphis politics as usual?

Justin Ford has given out gas to energize his push for a seat on the Shelby County Commission, but that gimmick has apparently done little to excite the electorate.

Maybe Cohen could use a similar gimmick and just tell the voters that he is going split his million dollar war chest with 9th Congressional voters. If he did this, we could see some Herenton loyalists fleeing the Herenton camp like rats on a sinking ship.

Old man Sidney Chism has his work cut out for him in trying to keep the Herenton political base energized. A little free gas at the pumps might help.
